For Holy Trinity students, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a spectator sport. But Lucas Dutra, an international student from Brazil who recently came to HT, competes heavily in MMA.

I used to fight when I lived in Brazil because that was my passion. It made me feel good, but I had to quit when I came to the U.S., but I intend to fight here too,” said Dutra.

Dutra’s main sport in Brazil was MMA, but since moving here he realized that high schools don’t have  MMA teams like Brazil. Instead, Dutra is trying to focus on soccer, but is still practicing MMA by himself until he can find a nice gym in which to train.

Dutra knows multiple fighting styles like kickboxing, boxing, muay thai, jiu-jitsu, and obviously MMA. He has already impressed multiple students at HT just by talking about his fighting and showing videos, which has helped him make many new friends since coming to HT.

Rio isn’t as nice a place to live as it looks sometimes, it’s often the opposite of what people expect when they see Rio. For Dutra, knowing how to fight was as much of a life skill as a sport.

“In Rio, it was dangerous to walk on the street carrying valuables like cell phones, watches, and laptops in the open because the thieves would steal. There are not enough policemen on the street,” said Dutra.

Dutra plans on going back to Brazil over the summer, but coming back for school. He wants to finish high school here, and also go to college and med school in the U.S. to become a doctor. Dutra is a very hard worker and even made the varsity soccer team this year, which he plans to work hard at as well.
