Senior Hannah Gunderson started playing on the Holy Trinity Varsity Girls Lacrosse team in seventh grade.

“It’s been a long journey. It’s crazy to see how over the six years I’ve been on the team, I’ve witnessed the team grow so much as an amazing group of girls,” Gunderson said.

This year, Gunderson was made team captain alongside senior Olivia McHenry. The team started practicing in mid-January, a month before their first game.

“We did some conditioning to prepare us for the intensity of the games, and drills to improve our structure and hand work on the field,” Spirit Coordinator Natalie Huniu said. This is Huniu’s third and last year on the team, as she is about to graduate soon.

“I’m really proud of how the season has started so far because we lost a lot of really important seniors from last year. But as a unit we were able to make a comeback and together become strong again, which is especially great because there are a lot of new people who have never picked up sticks before,” said Huniu.

Gunderson has made some personal goals that have to do with the entire team as well during her last season.

“We have a lot of new people in the field this year. My biggest goal as one of the team captains is to integrate them as part of the team. This way, when Olivia and I leave, it will be like a building block for the team to keep growing,” Gunderson said.

As their season is kicking off, the girls have already begun to excel. They lost their first game, but worked really well as a team, which is one of their biggest goals. Their second game was a win against Merritt Island, a team they had not played in a long time and they did outstanding.

“ Our team is really cohesive this year, especially with our players in the circle. Our team is pretty small this year, but we all complement each other really well on the field,” said Gunderson.

With a player experienced as Gunderson, who has seen it all over the years, leading the team, the girls are bound to do amazing this season. As we watch them achieve their goals by working together, the team will soon say goodbye to their five seniors in May, McHenry, Huniu, Gunderson, Olivia Moore and Elizabeth Badolato as they graduate and become lacrosse veterans.
