Students who are either new to crocheting or seasoned pros can have a fun time at the crochet club, which meets every Monday from 3:00 to 4:00 in the Ideas Center. A typical meeting starts with students finding a seat at the table and working on the crochet projects that they brought in, or projects that sponsor Cathy Koos has prepared for the kids who are newer to crocheting.
The crochet club originally started as a part of an earlier club called the Girl Up Club.
“When I was doing the Girl Up Club, the times that we had the most fun were when we were knitting and crocheting for different service projects, so I decided maybe we should just focus on that exclusively,” Koos said.
She had first started her crochet journey when her daughter Danielle was a senior in high school. Koos also shared that she enjoyed making blankets with chunky yarn when she crocheted.
Similar to Koos, senior Madeline Pesi likes using the most interesting yarn she can find from the brightly colored to thin scales.
Pesi was first inspired to crochet when she joined the crochet club last school year.
“[Mrs. Koos] taught me the basics, then my mom got me a starting kit for my birthday that pushed me to practice more,” Pesi said.
Crocheting can be challenging, so finding a comfortable place is always the best option.
“I like to crochet in my bed,” Pesi said. “I’ll put on a TV show and crochet for hours.”
Crochet is one of those things you can enjoy no matter what age you are. It’s a club where you can relax, grab your hook and yarn, and crochet the day away.
