When you think of studying, you probably think of sitting at your kitchen table or at a desk somewhere in your house. However, some think of a lively coffee house setting, like Starbucks. The warm and inviting atmosphere welcomes collaboration with the table arrangement style, and drinks and snacks are readily available for those longer sessions as well.
“I go to Starbucks because it’s peaceful and I can get a drink there,” senior Kendall Johnson said. “It has a nice ambiance.”
Others like the collaborative environment that the establishment provides.
“It’s nicer to study with friends, and you have a built-in resource to talk to people about what’s going on in your classes,” senior Sofia Alikhan said. “It’s close to school and it’s also a good study environment because there’s big tables so you can fit a lot of people together.”
On one hand, some people like the chatty background noise and the action of leaving your house to get work done.
“I just feel like I don’t get work done at my house because there’s so much other stuff going on and you end up getting bothered by other family members or other things you have to do,” Alikhan said. “If I’m going somewhere just to do homework then it’s easier to go to Starbucks so I get everything done at once.”
On the other hand, some students like the comforting environment of their home.
“If you study in the same spot it’s almost a signal for your brain,” senior Brayden Seitz said. “So if you have a good spot in your room that’s nice and quiet, I feel like you can be ultra focused.”
If you struggle with focusing at your home, maybe branch out of your comfort zone and try a local coffee shop or an establishment with the same vibe.
“I encourage people to study at Starbucks because it really is a good environment,” Johnson said.
