When you think about the sport of golf, the usual stigma is plaid pants and old, retired grandpas. The Holy Trinity Girls Golf team is breaking this stereotype. The girls have a great team dynamic and are looking forward to this upcoming season. Team captains Brooke Hess, Hannah Harrington, and Xinlei Shen are leading the team after the team’s star-seniors graduated last year. With no seniors, this is a rebuilding year for the team.
Harrington has been playing golf for five years and enjoys “being on the course and seeing different courses around Florida.” Hess has been on the team for five years as well, and enjoys “getting to practice and play with my teammates.” “My favorite part of golf is hitting the ball. It’s very satisfying to play with my teammates,” Shen said.
One of the team members, Juliet Nigara, says that she enjoys that golf is “more of an individual sport while also being a part of a team. I can better myself and work on only my game, but at the same time have a bunch of people that I play for, so it’s not just for myself.” Nigara also loves the connections and friends she’s made playing golf. “That feeling when you hit a really, really good shot, and it’s just the best feeling in the whole world.”
Practices are held every weekday at the US1 Golf center and the Indian River Colony Club. Golfers are expected to be ready to practice at 3:30 and practice till 5:30. Matches begin at 3:30 and go for about 2 hours. The team’s biggest competition is Viera. Their biggest rival is Cocoa Beach, whom they beat last year. The girls enjoy working together to take down the competition and dominate the course.
