If hoodies are appropriate on their own, then it shouldn’t matter what is or isn’t hidden underneath them. Every morning looks different for every student on campus. Most are rushed and filled with students trying to pack their bags quickly enough to eat a few bites of breakfast before they have to go to school. Out of all the things students are worried about, it shouldn’t be if they have a polo on underneath their hoodies and sweatshirts.
Over the years many rules have changed here at Holy Trinity, but one of the biggest changes for students was the rule that made it mandatory to wear a polo underneath sweatshirts and hoodies. To most this might not be a big issue, but as a student myself, let me provide you with the knowledge that it is actually a much larger hassle than you might think. Most hoodies are bought to fit students and keep them warm, but they usually become uncomfortable once a polo has been added. Going with that, we live in Florida, which also means everyone should know how hot it can get here. August – the hottest month of the year – is a month that we are in school. Now you might be thinking, that’s not an issue, but when you have classrooms that are all low 60’s which makes for a very cold environment compared to the scorching outside temperature. What I am trying to get at is that it can sometimes be more comfortable for students to just wear a hoodie instead of a hoodie plus a polo to avoid the hassle of carrying the hoodie all day long and taking it off and on all day long.
Holy Trinity is an elite school that has accomplished so many things in so many years and I think that having a rule about wearing a polo under your hoodie should be the school’s least concern. Students come to school to learn and work hard towards something bigger and if they are worried about wearing a polo under their hoodies so they don’t get in disciplinary trouble, they cannot focus on their full potential. If our hoodies were not HT sanctioned, I would understand the need to have an extra polo, but all students are wearing pre-approved Holy Trinity hoodies which means it shouldn’t be a problem what students are wearing underneath. Besides, if a student doesn’t take their hoodie off all day anyway, what does it matter if they have a polo on or not?
Action must be taken to reverse or remedy this illogical issue. It shouldn’t matter what students are wearing under their hoodies as long as they are appropriate and school issued. Administration needs to take into consideration the hard work these students do and how receiving detention for not wearing a polo under your hoodie is an unreasonable punishment.
