Each year the student body elects who their co-presidents are going to be. In the January 2026 elections, Bo Bagwell and Damien Henderson are the new class of 2027 co-presidents. They already have ideas and plans on how they plan to improve our school community.
A major goal of theirs is to give the students more of a voice in school decisions. “Our number one goal for the school is for everything to be a democracy, we want to have lots of voting so it’s the students’ choice,” Bagwell said. One of their proposals is on dress code, specifically hoodies and sweatshirts.
“We are trying to allow no shirts under sweatshirts,” said Henderson. Along with creating a voice for the student population, they want to raise those voices in the student section at sporting events. “We want to send out a message every Monday to try and get more people to show up to our games,” Henderson said.
“A lot of people are unaware of where and when the games are so we want to inform people of that,” Bagwell elaborated.
“Bringing more school spirit is also a large goal, because we have lots of work at this school so it’s hard to show up to all the games,” Henderson said.
Bagwell and Henderson’s campaign strategy was focused on reaching as many students as they possibly could. Through hanging posters everywhere from the entrance of the school, to the junior high building they were able to reach all members of the student body. “I think getting the younger kids was important to us,” Bagwell said.
“Meeting new students and telling them to vote for us was also important,” Henderson agreed.
The election process itself was something the two very much enjoyed. They didn’t go into the election with much anticipation of winning and were pleasantly surprised at the result. “We really enjoyed making our video and had fun in the process,” Bagwell said.
Lisa Dykes is the faculty sponsor in charge of Student Government. Elections have been switched to January because both Dykes and administration thought SGA involvement would be higher if students, especially seniors, weren’t so distracted by spring semester. “If we had students serve from January to December, those senior co-presidents would be done in December and I’d get new fresh faces in January,” said Dykes. This prevents the senior drop off in participation and gets new ideas and excitement from new members. As far as the video making process goes, last year’s candidates didn’t get the opportunity to because the turn around for election time was so quick that there wasn’t time for video-making.
As they begin this new year as presidents, Bagwell and Henderson hope to create a more involved and informed student body, full of school spirit and excitement.
