The Holy Trinity girls lacrosse team is heading into the new season with early preparation, greater intensity, and high hopes for an even more successful season. After a historic year that included defeating Edgewood and claiming a district title for the first time, the team is focused on building depth, strengthening bonds, and defending its title.
Junior Sally Oliver said the team’s preparation began much earlier than usual. “This season we prepared by starting a lot earlier than we have in past years. In the past, we’ve waited until a week before games even started to begin tryouts, but this year we started three weeks early with conditioning and stick work,” Oliver said.
In order to improve from last season, the team has also come together to go out and find more girls who want to participate in lacrosse, so they can build a deeper roster. “This season was definitely improving by creating more depth in our roster. In past years it’s been only two or three girls scoring, but this year we had a much wider range of girls playing club which really helps with our ability to rotate players and to move the ball better,” Oliver said.
With the change in roster a lot of younger girls have joined the team this season, so team bonding has become very important. With this mix of younger and older players, the team relies on leadership and growth, meaning players are always supporting one another both on and off the field. “We do a lot of team bonding to help bring us closer together. We also come up with cheers to support each other to stay hype on the sidelines,” said senior captain Piper Ashley.
Practices have become more structured and intense as the season progresses, with a greater emphasis on conditioning, precise drills, and team strategy. Players push each other to move at a faster pace and stay accountable.
“Our typical practice usually starts with a warm lap and stretching, then we go into stick drills to warm up our sticks,” Oliver said. After that, we spend time on positional drills, attack runs plays, midfielders work on stick skills and the draw, and defense gets their feet warm while working on clearing. At the end, we’ll either do full-field scrimmages or 7v7s. Then we finish with a little bit of running, and a lot of us stay after to keep working on special skills and shooting.”
The girls know going into their season that their schedule has some challenging games, but nonetheless they’re still excited for them,” Ashley said. “I’m really excited for our senior night and the Viera game because we’ve never beaten them, and this year we have a strong team so I think we have a good chance.”
Players have set ambitious goals for the season ahead. Senior captain Faith Cowell emphasized the team’s focus for their goals of success. “Win districts, go farther in regionals, and do more team bonding activities,” Cowell said.
With stronger preparation, increased roster depth, and a united team, the Holy Trinity girls lacrosse team is entering the season determined to build on last year’s success and make even more school history.
