After last year’s successful season, the boys varsity soccer team has high expectations. Making it all the way to the state championship and sadly coming up short of a victory, the boys want to finish what they started and win the state title.
Player loss is one of the biggest challenges the team will face. After losing three seniors, who were key players, the team will have to adapt to those changes. “Losing players and playing a new formation, that no one’s played before, will be different but it should work,” said senior captain Aiden Holtkamp, who has been playing on varsity for five years.
With the team primarily being made up of upper classmen, they hold a big influence on rising youth. “Older players like Aiden Holtkamp really help direct traffic and let us younger players know what to do,” said junior Kush Barochia. Many of the new, younger players on the team look up to the upper classmen as role models. “We have a big number of seniors on the team this season that can show leadership for the younger generation,” said junior Cody Seitz. The experience from older players who worked their way up to the top sets a standard of work rate and discipline.
How a team bonds off the field can determine how the team bonds on the field. “Outside of soccer we are all close friends,” said Seitz. The majority of the varsity team is made up of the senior, junior, and sophomore class which helps them work well together and connect.
All the boys have the same aspiration: to win a state championship. “With leadership we can win it all,” said Barochia. “After coming up just short of our goal everyone wants to do what we couldn’t complete and that’s the only option,” said Holtkamp. The team anticipates to be the best team in the county and go further then they went the previous season.
With the new season underway, the team has put in many hours of training and dedication to complete their ultimate goal.
